from oldbaileyonline, reference number t18391021-2711, 21 Oct 1839 Nathaniel Haswell and Andrew Burt stole 12 bowls value 30 shillings from Archibald Horn and another. Witness was james Ward, a builder who livedin Jewin Street, he saw Nathan come out of Horn’s house with the bowls in the act of lifting them on his head, he caught up with him in Bartholomew close, now with Burt wrapping the bowls up in his apron. Haswell denied it. Burgess a policeman took them into custody and at court produced a certificate of Haswell’s previous conviction. Found guilty transported for 14 years. Burt not guilty.

From UK Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books 1802-1849, Nathan (named as Nathaniel) was put on prison hulk ‘Leviathan’ at Portsmoouth on 4 Nov 1839, having been convicted on 21 Oct 1839 at the Old Bailey age 18, No 4942, convicted for larceny and former conviction, sentenced to 14 years, single, not literate, left 20 Feb

From information and photocopies from Valerie Cole, Nathan was sent to Van Diemens Land for 14 years for stealing zinc bowls. He left on the ship ‘Mandarin” on 25 Feb 1840. He landed in Van Diemensland (Tasmania) on 30th June 1840, going on to Sydney 30 Oct 1854, paying his own way. From photocopy sent by Valerie his trade was waiter, 5’ 3 3/4” tallage 18 years, complexion fair, head oval, no whiskers, visage oval, forehead high, eyebrows light, eyes grey,chin round. (now online at Tasmania archives) Later in 1862 he sponsored Mary(nee Haswell) and Richard Davies to come to Australia.
